My name is Rachael, and this is my service dog Cedar. I'm the owner of The Sharp K9. We are so excited to meet you!

The Sharp K9 is local to Mount Airy, Maryland, but you are not required to commute. We are currently accepting applicants from the DMV, West Virginia and southern Pennsylvania.

The Sharp K9 is currently hiring independent contractors for the following mobile roles:

  • Livestock Caretaker
    The Livestock Caretaker can expect to experience the following duties:
    • Daily turn-in & turn-out
    • Feed & Water
    • Mucking stables
    • Livestock enrichment
    • Side-walking
    • Bathing
    • Medication administration
    • Checking for discomfort or lameness
    • First-aid & CPR
    • May include cattle, horses, goats, pigs, and donkeys

      The Livestock Caretaker must have the following qualifications:
      • Ability to read and follow long, detailed instructions
      • Willingness to provide mental stimulation, guided exercise & enrichment to livestock
      • Must be able to manage a personal calendar given a list of time-sensitive tasks that require transportation to and fro
      • Preferred to have ~1 year of experience working  with livestock and/or horses
         
  • Pet Sitter (small animals, reptiles, pet birds & cats)
    The Pet Sitter can expect to experience the following duties:
    • Managing creative enrichment solutions (playtime)
    • Feed & Water
    • Medication administration
    • Bathing
    • Nail trimming & grinding
    • Checking for discomfort or limping
    • Changing heat & UV light bulbs
    • Bedding changes
    • Water changes
    • May include cats, hamsters, gerbils, ferrets, parrots, parakeets, chinchillas, snakes, aquarium fish, pond fish, turtles, lizards, and other small animals.

      The Pet Sitter must have the following qualifications:
      • Ability to read and follow long, detailed instructions
      • Willingness to provide mental stimulation & enrichment to small animals, especially birds & cats
      • Must be able to manage a personal calendar given a list of time-sensitive tasks that require transportation to and fro
         
  • Dog Sitter
    The Dog Sitter can expect to experience the following duties:
    • Bike-joring
    • Jogging
    • Hiking
    • Medication administration
    • Complicated feeding routines
    • Caring for:
      • High-energy dog breeds with high standards for exercise
      • Large, strong dogs
      • Mouthy dogs (i.e. Cattle Dogs, Belgian Malinois, etc)
      • Reactive dogs
    • Bathing (in-home)
    • Nail trimming & grinding (in-home)
    • Providing canine enrichment activities
    • Following strict behavior-reinforcement routines

      We are looking for the following experience & expertise in Dog Sitters:
      • Experience with high-drive, active dogs
      • Jogging with dogs
      • Bike-joring
      • Ability to give and enforce loud, stern commands
      • Ability to read canine body language
      • Ability to read and follow long, detailed instructions
      • Willingness to provide mental stimulation, enrichment, games, and physical exercise to dogs for up to 8 hours a day
      • Must be able to manage a personal calendar given a list of time-sensitive tasks that require transportation to and fro
      • Preferred to have ~1 year of experience working with dogs of varying temperaments & drives
         
  • Dog Trainer
    The Dog Trainer can expect to experience the following duties:
    • Behavior analysis
    • Specialty in one or more categories of training
      • Reactivity & fear management
      • Obedience
      • Puppy
      • Agility
      • Dock diving & Swimming
      • Aggression
      • Canine Good Citizen (CGC)
      • Service Dogs
      • Therapy Dogs
      • Emotional Support Animal (behavioral)
      • Bite work
      • Scent tracking
      • Other
    • Reading & interpreting canine body language
    • Utilizing an organized methodology to cater to client needs (specific methodology is not limited)
    • Training tools sales
    • Training packages sales
    • Advocating for pet health (refer to veterinarian, advise other means of training, etc)
    • Training in the client's home, a public park, or your own insured training rink
    • Dog transport
    • People-training

      We are looking for the following experience & expertise in Dog Trainers:
      • Experience with a variety of temperaments and breed classes OR
      • A specific specialty in at least one breed class or discipline (i.e. herding dogs, agility courses, terriers, hunting dogs, service dog public access, etc)
      • Must be able to manage a personal calendar given a list of time-sensitive tasks that require transportation to and fro
      • Must have or gain a veterinary CPR & first aid certification within 30 days of signing contract
      • If providing dog transport, you must have comprehensive commercial auto insurance with Pet Coverage and The Sharp K9 LLC as an additional insured party 
      • If utilizing a leased or owned training rink, you must have commercial general liability (CGL) insurance for that location.
      • Sales & interpersonal relationships

         
  • Horse Trainer
    The Horse Trainer can expect to experience the following duties:
    • Comprehensive Desensitization in as young as <1 year old foals
    • Groundwork
    • Saddle Training
    • Trick-training
    • Dressage
    • Jumping
    • Cross-country
    • Advocating for equine health (refer to veterinarian, advise other means of training, advise retirement, etc)
    • Training tools sales
    • Training packages sales
    • Equipment sales PRN
    • People-training
      We are looking for the following experience & expertise in Horse Trainers:
      • Experience with a variety of temperaments
      • Experience with in-tact and neutered/spayed horses
      • A specific specialty in at least one show discipline AND/OR
      • General training & desensitization experience
      • Must be able to manage a personal calendar given a list of time-sensitive tasks that require transportation to and fro
      • If utilizing a leased or owned riding rink, you must have commercial general liability (CGL) insurance for that location.
      • Ability to read & interpret equine body language
      • Sales & interpersonal relationships 

         
  • Fowl (Poultry & Waterfowl) Caretaker
    The Fowl Caretaker can expect to experience the following duties:
    • Managing creative enrichment solutions (playtime)
    • Feed & Water
    • Medication administration
    • Bedding changes
    • Nail trimming & grinding
    • Checking for discomfort or limping
    • Duck & geese pool water changes
    • May include ducks, geese, peacocks, chickens, emus, ostriches, and other outdoor birds

      The Pet Sitter must have the following qualifications:
      • Ability to read and follow long, detailed instructions
      • Willingness to provide mental stimulation & enrichment
      • Must be able to manage a personal calendar given a list of time-sensitive tasks that require transportation to and fro
      • Preferred to have ~1 year of experience working with outdoor birds
      • Safe foods for fowl enrichment & scatter feeding

         

Note, all roles have the following minimum qualifications:

  • High School Diploma
  • At least 18 years old
  • Driver's License & clean driving record
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Ability to read and follow long, detailed instructions
  • Willingness to provide mental stimulation & enrichment to their animal specialty, not just walks, food and potty.
  • Must be able to manage a personal calendar given a list of time-sensitive tasks that require transportation to and fro 
  • First aid & CPR certification or signed attestation to First Aid & CPR from a reference
    • References can be:
      • former client
      • former employer
      • FFA educator
      • etc
    • Certification or attestation must be gained within 30 days of signing contract
    • We understand there aren't formal/online CPR & First aid certifications available for all types of animals, and some animals will have very similar protocols to others. We are flexible. 
    • Dog and Cat first aid & CPR courses & and certifications are plentiful and preferred for dog and cat caretakers.
